Mini to debut electric crossover and convertible in Shanghai

The convertible will use the Mini Electric/Cooper SE electric drivetrain, with a 135-kilowatt (184-hp) electric motor. It will have a range of 124 miles (200 km) under the WLTP test cycle.

The electric convertible will be built alongside the combustion engine Mini Convertible at VDL Nedcar in the Netherlands. It will be available from April, priced at 52,500 pounds ($63,800) in the UK.

Mini will initially build the new electric Mini hatchback in China instead of in its home plant in Oxford, England, where the current model is built. It may add production of the electric model in Oxford later.

Both the Aceman and electric hatchback will be built in the same plant in the eastern Chinese province of Jiangsu.

Mini’s new electric hatchback is not expected to debut at the Shanghai show.
