The Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF), a dairy cooperative under the brand name ‘Nandini’ on Wednesday announced an increase in the price of milk and curd by ₹2 per litre in the state, read their statement. The new prices will come into effect from Thursday.
The decision was taken at a KMF board meeting held in Bengaluru. KMF had decided to hike the price by ₹3 per litre last week. However, the decision was rolled back after chief minister Basavaraj Bommai’s intervention, who had asked to defer the hie till the next meeting.
After the hike, the price of toned milk would be ₹39, double-toned milk ₹ 38, homogenised toned milk ₹ 40, homogenised cow milk ₹44, special milk ₹45, Shubham milk ₹45, Samruddhi milk ₹50, homogenised standardised milk ₹46 and Santrupthi milk ₹52. Meanwhile, Nandini curd would be ₹47 per kilogram.
According to the KMF, Nandini milk “would be the cheapest per litre when compared with the neighbouring states”. It had earlier said the entire hike would be passed on to the farmers, who are facing various challenges.
KMF had claimed that the hike was necessary due to rising feed and fodder costs, cattle being affected by lumpy skin disease, adverse climatic conditions among others which are impacting milk production in the state.
It had petitioned the state government several times since January this year in order to revise milk prices. The KMF members had passed a resolution in the general body meeting held in September to hike the milk price by ₹3 owing to pressure from all the 14 district milk unions.
