mevani: Jignesh Mevani gets bail in tweet case, re-arrested for ‘assaulting’ woman officer in Assam | India News

GUWAHATI: A local court in AssamтАЩs Kokrajhar district on Monday granted bail to Independent Gujarat MLA from Vadgam, Jignesh Mevani, who was arrested by Assam Police on April 20 for posting a controversial “tweetтАЭ against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and allegedly тАЬinciting enmity between communitiesтАЭ.
The Dalit leader was taken back to the Kokrajhar Jail after being granted bail by First Class Judicial Magistrate Bhavna Kakoty with several conditions. However, there was no relief for Mevani as within minutes he was rearrested by police from neighbouring Barpeta district in Assam in another case related to “assault” on a woman officer and deterring public servant from discharge of duty.
MevaniтАЩs counsel Anghsuman Bora said he has been granted bail in the case registered with Kokrajhar police station but unfortunately he has been-rearrested by Barpeta police. “This time he has been charged with sections 323, 353 and 354 of Indian Penal Code for allegedly assaulting a woman police personnel from Barpeta district while he was in custody in a different district, Kokrajhar.тАЭ
“We have also been informed that another new cases on the same charges have been filed on the basis of an FIR in Goalpara district in Assam,тАЭ he said.
He added, тАЬWe have not yet received copies of the two new FIRs but we are prepared and we have absolute faith on the judiciary.тАЭ
An Assam Police team had picked Mevani up from Palanpur circuit house on night of April 20 after the legislatorтАЩs tweets on Prime Minister Modi and Nathuram Godse went viral. He has tweeted that Prime Minister Modi “considered Godse as God”. Twitter has since deleted his tweets.
The MLA was brought to Kokrajhar on transit remand and remanded to a three-day police custody on April 21 by the Kokrajhar Chief Judicial Magistrate.
