Pieces of a metal fence have impaled an Adelaide driver’s windshield during a car accident, trapping the man inside but narrowly missing his body.

Witnesses parts of the fence pierced through the driver’s windscreen after a Subaru veered across the road into his lane, causing the driver to swerve, smashing through a metal fence before hitting a truck.

The shards missed the man in his 70s by “centimetres”, according to a witness, and he was taken to Royal Adelaide Hospital with minor injuries.

The car hit the fence, but then continued to drive down the road, dragging the debris with it until it made an eventual stop, witnesses said.

Emergency responders had to cut the door off of the vehicle, and then cut through the fencing to free the man from the debris, which had wound itself inside the car.

No one else was injured in the crash, which was caught on dash cam by a passing motorist.

Police are investigating the cause of the accident.
