Toy maker Mattel┬аhas introduced its first Barbie with Down┬аsyndrome in a bid to┬аmake its famous doll range more inclusive.

The new doll’s face also has a rounder shape, and has┬аalmond-shaped eyes, smaller ears and a flat nasal bridge, Mattel┬аsaid.
“The doll’s palms even include a single line, a┬аcharacteristic often associated with those with Down┬аsyndrome,” Mattel said.
The doll is dressed is a puff-sleeved frock adorned with┬аbutterflies and flowers in yellow and blue тАФ┬аcolours associated┬аwith Down┬аsyndrome awareness.
She wears a pink necklace with three upward chevrons┬аrepresenting the three copies of the 21st chromosome as well as┬аpink ankle foot orthotics, Mattel said.
“Our goal is to enable all children to see themselves in┬аBarbie, while also encouraging children to play with dolls who┬аdo not look like themselves,” Lisa McKnight, executive vice-president and global head of Barbie and┬аdolls at┬аMattel, said in the┬аstatement.┬а
