RAIPUR: CPI(Maoist) central committee and politburo member Katakam Sudarshan aka ‘Comrade Anand’ has died of a heart attack in the forests of Chhattisgarh. He carried a bounty of Rs 1 crore from the Chhattisgarh police.
Believed to be nearing 70, the Maoist leader was suffering from hypertension, diabetes and lung disorders for a long time. According to CPI (Maoist) spokesman Abhay, Sudarshan died around on May 31 in Dandakaranya forest, which the insurgents consider their ‘guerrilla zone’.
One of the most senior Maoist leaders, his association with the insurgent outfit goes back five decades, say sources.
In 1995, Sudarshan was appointed secretary of North Zone Special Zonal Committee and then the Maoists’ central committee.
He is the second central committee member to die in a Chhattisgarh jungle in the last two years. In October 2021, Akkiraju Haragopal alias Ramakrishna, who carried a reward of Rs 1 crore, died in south Bastar following kidney complications.
He, too, had diabetes.
