Many municipalities at risk of damage from a possible Nankai Trough megaquake lack an understanding of how the government’s warning system works, a government survey showed Tuesday.
The Cabinet Office survey found that 12.8% of at-risk municipalities were not aware of details of the system fully or sure what measures they should take when an advisory is issued to warn of the elevated risk of a such a megaquake.
More than 60% said they were confused over how to respond to the “emergency information” alert that was issued for the first time under the system after a 7.1-magnitude temblor struck off the coast of Miyazaki Prefecture on Aug. 8.
