A man’s body has been found inside a papier-mâché dinosaur after he reportedly fell inside the replica Stegosaurus while trying to find his mobile phone.

Police are investigating the death of the 39-year-old after firefighters were called to cut into the hollow statue on the outskirts of Barcelona so the body could be removed.

A local police spokeswoman said it looked as though the man had “entered the statue head first and couldn’t get out.”

She added the body had likely been inside the structure, which stands outside the Cubic Building in Santa Coloma de Gramenet, “for a couple of days.”

On Saturday morning, a man and his son out playing in the area alerted authorities after spotting the body through a crack in the Stegosaurus’ leg.

A spokeswoman for the regional police force, the Mossos d’Esquadra, said the man’s death was not being treated as suspicious.

“A father and son noticed that there was something inside and raised the alarm,” she said.

“We found the body of a man inside the leg of this dinosaur statue. It’s an accidental death; there was no violence.
