The grand Mahakumbh Mela 2025, renowned as the largest gathering on Earth, officially commenced on Monday, coinciding with the auspicious occasion of Paush Purnima. The event, which spans 45 days, is expected to attract an estimated 1.5 crore (15 million) devotees from across the globe to the sacred confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers at the Triveni Sangam.
The Mela began with the significant ritual of ‘Shahi Snan,’ marking a rare celestial alignment that occurs once every 144 years. Devotees gathered in vast numbers, embracing the spiritual fervor of this historic occasion.
Key Highlights and Arrangements
CM Yogi Adityanath’s Statement: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath emphasized the global significance of the Mahakumbh, inviting people worldwide to experience India’s rich cultural and spiritual heritage. He described the event as a rare opportunity to witness the vibrant traditions of Uttar Pradesh.
Grand Yagya by Namami Gange: On the eve of Maha Kumbh, the Namami Gange initiative organized a large-scale ‘yagya’ at the Sangam. Over 200 Ganga Sevadoots, along with thousands of participants, pledged their commitment to preserving the purity and flow of the Ganga. The event highlighted the contributions of India’s youth to the Ganga Swachhata Abhiyan.
Safety Measures: The Uttar Pradesh Police, along with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and water police units, have been deployed to ensure the safety of the millions of devotees participating in the ‘Shahi Snan’ and other rituals throughout the festival.
Traffic Management: Extensive traffic plans have been implemented to manage the large influx of vehicles and ensure smooth movement for devotees attending the Mela.
Innovative QR Code System: In a bid to enhance convenience for pilgrims, over 50,000 QR codes have been installed on electricity poles across the 25 sectors of the Mela area. These QR codes will assist in location identification and allow pilgrims to lodge complaints related to electricity issues.
Helicopter Joyrides: Offering a unique perspective of the expansive Kumbh area, helicopter rides have been made available at a reduced cost of ₹1,296 per person. These 7-8 minute rides, starting January 13, provide tourists with a breathtaking aerial view of the Mela and Prayagraj city.
Medical Facilities: To cater to the health needs of pilgrims, three hospitals have been established along National Highway 19 in Bhadohi district, at Aurai, Gopiganj, and Unj police stations. These facilities will become fully operational from January 14, ensuring medical support for devotees traveling to the Maha Kumbh.
The Mahakumbh Mela 2025 will conclude on February 26, with significant bathing rituals scheduled on January 14 (Makar Sankranti), January 29 (Mauni Amavasya), and February 3 (Basant Panchami). This grand spiritual event promises to be a profound experience of devotion, community, and cultural celebration.
