A new statue of Lady Justice has been unveiled at the Supreme Court, featuring notable changes: the blindfold is removed, and the sword has been replaced by the Constitution. Traditionally, the blindfold symbolised impartiality, while the sword represented authority to punish injustice. This updated statue, placed in the judges’ library at the direction of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, symbolises that the law is not blind and focuses on justice through the Constitution rather than punishment. The move is seen as an effort to shed colonial-era symbols, in line with recent legal reforms, including the replacement of the Indian Penal Code with the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
