In an interview with Bollywood Hungama, Lalit Pandit, one-half of the famed composer duo Jatin-Lalit, ignited controversy by accusing Nadeem-Shravan, the composer behind the iconic soundtrack of Aashiqui, of plagiarism. Pandit alleges that Nadeem Akhtar Saifi and Shravan Kumar Rathod lifted melodies from Pakistani songs for the 1990 musical drama starring Rahul Roy and Anu Aggarwal. “Honestly, Nadeem-Shravan’s music was not of our style. Most of the song that they had done at that time were…So Nadeem would go to Dubai, from there he would buy a lot of Pakistani cassettes, get them here reproduce. He further added, “Aashiqui songs are actually Pakistani tracks, with words (retained). Many of the songs! Music of a composer should reflect their style. If you listen to ours, you’d instantly know it is Jatin-Lalit music because everything was done by us.” When quizzed if Jatin-Lalit ever took ‘inspiration’, Lalit Pandit replied he has taken ‘bits’ from English songs and used it in Bollywood tracks, but Jatin was a ‘pure’ composer.

FYI, the name Nadeem-Shravan is synonymous with the golden era of Bollywood music in the 90s. Their compositions for Mahesh Bhatt’s musical drama Aashiqui took the nation by storm. Tracks like “Dheere Dheere,” “Bas Ek Sanam Chaahiye,” “Nazar Ke Saamne,” and “Jaane Jigar Jaaneman” became anthems for the youth, capturing the emotions of love and heartbreak with unparalleled melody.
