KOHIMA: Voting started in Nagaland on a peaceful note with high aspirations and long queues of young and old voters joining the festival of democracy by casting their votes early in the day.
Long queues were already being witnessed before voting started at 7 am. Elaborate security has been placed in capital Kohima and all other districts where lies the critical and vulnerable polling stations.
Vimetezo Sophie, a young voter was among the first to cast his vote in polling station 1 in Kohima town constituency. “We are residents of the prime location of the capital and at least do not face major civic issues. After graduating from college last year, a job is all that I want. Political parties too have campaigned with an assurance of skilling the youths. So I have voted keeping in mind the job prospect,” said the 22-year-old.
He said that considering the sensitivity of the Naga issue, the political parties mainly focused on development agenda and thorough implementation of the central schemes in Nagaland.
Enthusiasm is high among the elderly too. Akheito (67), a resident of Daklane in Kohima said that more than change development is the issue for the voters like him.
“I am also voting mainly with a hope of better job opportunities for the youngsters, though I did not campaign for any party. At this age, we have nothing to gain,” said the retired government employee.
Amid sporadic incidents of violence over the last one week, polling is underway in Dimapur and other sensitive pockets under tight security cover.
Total 13.17 lakh voters are registered to exercise their franchise in this election. In Nagaland, female voters (6,55,144) are more in numbers than the male voters (6,52,938). Total 11,575 polling officials have been engaged by the election authorities.
