New Delhi: Kesari Chapter 2, which hit theatres on April 18, is earning praise from critics and audiences alike for its powerful storytelling and standout performances. The historical drama, set in the volatile aftermath of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, features a compelling ensemble led by Akshay Kumar, R. Madhavan, and Ananya Panday.

However, it is R. Madhavan’s performance as Neville McKinley — a morally conflicted antagonist — that has become the focal point of discussion. The character, a British-educated Indian lawyer caught between allegiance to the British crown and the brutal reality of colonial oppression, has resonated with viewers for its depth and complexity.

In a recently released behind-the-scenes featurette, director Karan Singh Tyagi and producer Karan Johar shed light on the creation of the role and Madhavan’s intense preparation.

“When the character of Neville was written, we needed a strong actor — someone who could truly match the weight of the protagonist,” said Johar. “And we all know that ‘Maddy’ Madhavan is an absolutely outstanding actor.”

Director Tyagi recalled Madhavan’s commanding presence on set: “He walked around like a tiger on his very first day. Every movement, every pause, every glance — he brought Neville to life with incredible precision.”

The BTS clip, shared widely on social media, was captioned: “Every stare, every silence, every decision — crafted to leave a mark. Here’s a glimpse into how Neville McKinley, the face of fear, was created.”

McKinley’s character is inspired by a composite of ten real-life Indian lawyers appointed by the British to counter nationalist leader Sir Sankaran Nayar — a historical detail that adds further gravitas to the role.

The film’s release also coincides with a milestone in Madhavan’s career, as the acclaimed actor celebrates 25 years in Indian cinema. Known for his versatility and thoughtful role choices, Madhavan continues to explore challenging narratives. His recent performance in the critically lauded Hisaab Barabar, the forthcoming cricket drama Test, and his much-anticipated biopic on visionary inventor G.D. Naidu have cemented his reputation as one of the industry’s most dynamic talents.

Adding to his diverse slate is ‘Aap Jaisa Koi’, another project fans are eagerly awaiting.

With Kesari Chapter 2, Madhavan once again demonstrates his ability to deliver layered, unforgettable performances — and further establishes himself as a mainstay of meaningful Indian cinema.
