Kerala Shocker: 60-Year-Old Heart Patient Dies After Treatment by ‘Unqualified’ Second-Year Medical Student, Doctor Arrested
Thiruvananthapuram, October 1: In a shocking incident, a 60-year-old heart patient died after being treated by an unqualified resident medical officer who had not yet completed his second year of MBBS. The event took place on September 23 at a private hospital in Kozhikode district. Following the incident, the doctor was fired, and Kerala police arrested him.
According to a report by India Today, The doctor identified as Abu Abraham Luke is yet to complete his medical education. He treated Vinod Kumar, a patient who experienced severe chest pain and breathlessness. His son, Dr Ashwin Pachaatt Vinod, was shocked to discover that the resident medical officer responsible for his father’s care was only a second-year medical student. He lost his father due to gross negligence on the part of TMH Hospital and an unqualified individual posing as an RMO on duty on September 23. At that time, he was fulfilling his responsibilities as a resident doctor at PGI Chandigarh. Over the phone, he contacted Abu Abraham Luke, who informed him that his father had been brought to the emergency department with complaints of shortness of breath and chest pain. Luke told him that his father arrived a bit late and that nothing could have been done to save him, Ashwin told India Today. After travelling from Chandigarh to Kozhikode to perform his father’s last rites, Ashwin Pachaatt Vinod started looking into the events surrounding his father’s death. He learned that Abu Abraham Luke had not finished his MBBS degree, having enrolled in a private college in Kerala in 2011 and failing to pass his second-year subjects over the past 12 years.
Ashwin brought the issue to the attention of higher authorities and shared his experience on social media. He expressed his distress that, while he was fulfilling his duties as a resident doctor in Chandigarh, he expected at least basic first-aid from a qualified doctor in Kerala during an emergency. Following his complaint, police filed an FIR and arrested Luke.
