NEW DELHI: Congress leader and former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Kamal Nath has quit as the legislature party leader in the state assembly, according to sources.
Party president Sonia Gandhi has accepted his resignation, they added. Nath, who is the state party president, resigned as CLP leader in view the party’s “one person, one post” policy.
Dr Govind Singh has been appointed the new leader of the Congress Legislature Party in the state assembly. Singh is a MLA from Lahar constituency.

Kamal Nath led the Congress to a hard-fought victory in the 2018 Madhya Pradesh state elections, dislodging the BJP from power. It finished just shy of majority with 114 seats, 5 more than the BJP’s 109.
Congress formed the government with Nath as CM with support from 7 MLAs from SP, BSP and Independents. But an internal rebellion saw 20 part MLAs, considered close to Jyotiraditya Scindia, resign in March 2020. Subsequently the Congress government lost power and BJP’s Shivraj Chouhan sworn in as CM with support from Congress rebels.
The latest developments in Madhya Pradesh might come up during the Congress’s May 13-15 ‘Chintan Shivir’ in Udaipur.
