Two jet-skiing parents taking an after dark joyride have been saved by WA Police in a midnight rescue.

The couple became stranded at sea, leaving their young kids alone at a Port Kennedy boat ramp for several hours.

As the pair took their joyride five kilometres off the coast, their two children aged five and 11 were alone at a boat ramp in the dark at 8pm on Wednesday, police said.

A member of public found the children and alerted authorities.

Senior Sergeant Grant Rosman said the family was “very fortunate” the person alerted police when they did.

“However, three or four hours out to sea is still a long time to be out there,” he said.

Rescue crews sprung into action in pitch black darkness.

They found the 41-year-old and 37-year-old floating out at sea.

Both were dehydrated but in good spirits.

The incident has sparked another water safety message from authorities.

Police said the pair were not wearing appropriate life jackets and were not carrying flares, EPIRBs, a marine radio or a mobile phone.

“It takes seconds and moments for things to go wrong and those moments can cause people to die out on the water and we don’t want to see,” Rosman said.
