One of the most popular voices in the world of cinema, James Earl Jones, passed away on Monday at the age of 93. The legendary Hollywood actor most famous for his villainous voice as Darth Vader in numerous Star Wars films died at his home in Dutchess County, as per his rep. In an illustrious career spanning over six decades, the renowned actor earned three Tony awards, two Emmys and a Grammy. He also won an honorary Oscar for lifetime achievement in 2011. 1. Voice of Darth Vader in ‘Star Wars’ Franchise

One of the most recognisable villain voices in cinema history, Jones’s voiceover as Darth Vader in the Star Wars franchise is nothing short of iconic. Another lesser-known fact about his iconic portrayal is that the actor requested the makers leave his name out of the credits of the films Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope (1977) and The Empire Strikes Back (1980). He later went on to reprise his iconic character in the later films Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

2. Terence Mann in ‘Field of Dreams’

In Phil Alden’s hit 1989 baseball movie, James Earl Jones portrayed author Terence Mann and an activist who teams up with Kevin Costner’s Ray Kinsella, a farmer, to build a baseball field in his cornfield. The sports fantasy drama also starred Amy Madigan, Gaby Hoffman and Ray Liotta in key roles.

3. Mr Mertle in ‘The Sandlot’

This 1993 sports comedy film, directed by David Mickey Evans, tells the story of young baseball players. While his portrayal of Mr. Mertle may not be one of his greatest, his simple yet precise depiction of the soft character was just perfect. Not to forget the The Sandlot is also considered as one of the most iconic baseball movies of all time.

4. King Jaffe Joffer in ‘Coming to America’ and ‘Coming 2 America’

In the romantic comedy directed by John Landis, James Earl Jones plays King Jaffe Joffer, who embarks on a trip to New York to find his eldest son, Prince Akeem (Eddie Murphy), who has fled their home in search of true love. In the 2021 sequel, Coming 2 America, which takes place 30 years after the events of the first film, King Jaffe Joffer, now on his deathbed, raises concerns regarding his succession. The second part, however, does not have much focus on Jones, but he played his part well.

5. Voice of Mufasa in ‘The Lion King’

ones voiced the iconic character of Mufasa in Disney’s 1994 film The Lion King. Judging by his voice alone, his portrayal of Mufasa was both benevolent and just while simultaneously exuding royalty and fierceness.
