Mumbai, January 4: The Income Tax Department of India had issued December 31, 2022, to be the last date to file an income tax return (ITR) for those who missed the deadline of July 31, 2022. This deadline is important since this is the last chance to file ITR for FY21-22, including for those who filed their original ITR on time but need to revise it due to some error or omission. How to File Income Tax Return?

  • Visit the e-filing website incometax.gov.in.
  • Register or Login to e-file your returns
  • Click on ‘Taxpayer’ and then enter the details of your PAN and click on ‘validate’ and hit ‘continue’.
  • Provide details such as your name, address, gender, residential status, date of birth, etc.
  • Provide your Email ID and registered mobile number.
  • Once the form has been duly filled, click on ‘Continue’.
  • Verify using a 6-digit One Time Password (OTP) sent to your registered mobile number and Email address.
  • Once the OTP has been verified, a new window will open where you will have to verify the details provided by you. In case any detail given is incorrect, you can change it, following which another OTP will be sent to validate the change.
  • The final step will be set up a password and secure login message.
  • Click on ‘Register’ following which you will receive an acknowledgment message stating that the registration process has been completed successfully.

The taxpayers must carry documents such as TDS certificates (Form 16, Form 16A), Interest certificates (savings accounts, fixed deposits etc.), repayment certificates (if you have home loan, education loan), Form 26AS, annual information statement (AIS), Aadhaar number, and bank accounts.
