Incoming turbulent weather to end period of relatively settled conditions

After days of relatively settled conditions along the nation’s east coast, residents in two states have been warned over an incoming heatwave set to make life uncomfortable.

The “low-intensity heatwave”, headed for both New South Wales and Queensland’s southeast, will roll in from tomorrow and peak on Thursday, where temperatures are set to sizzle close 35 degrees in each state.

Aside from today, which will bring mild temperatures and scattered shows in both regions, things will soon turn sweaty, with conditions expected to linger between the mid to high 30s along the coast for the remainder of the week.

In Queensland, residents living nearby a number of the state’s rivers have have been reminded again about potential flooding in the wake of previous heavy rainfall.

A major flood warning is currently in place for the Albert, Nicholson, Gregory and Leichhardt Rivers.

“Record major flooding is expected to be easing at Burketown on the Albert River,” The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) said.

“Minor to major flooding is easing elsewhere along the Nicholson, Gregory and Leichhardt Rivers.

Numerous rivers – among them the Leichhardt, the Albert and the Nicholson – are all pouring their floodwaters from recent heavy rains out into the Gulf of Carpentaria. (Weatherzone)

“River levels are generally easing along the Nicholson, Gregory and Leichhardt rivers, but remain high in the lower catchments, in particular at Burketown Airstrip on the Albert River where the river level is expected to have peaked on Sunday, above the previous record flood level of 6.78 metres recorded in 2011.

“The situation is being closely monitored and updates will be provided as necessary.”

Across the major cities today, Brisbane will see partly cloudy conditions with tops of 21 degrees, there will be showers in Sydney with tops of 25 degrees and Canberra will peak at 26 with partly cloudy skies.

In Melbourne, it’ll be 29 degrees and fine, in Adelaide it’ll be 27 degrees and sunny, while in Perth conditions are set to hit 29 degrees and a scorching 33 degrees is headed for Darwin, with the city also expected to see storms.
