A woman in Hyderabad’s Kukatpally, G Buchamma, died by suicide on September 27, allegedly fearing the demolition of her house by the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRA). Buchamma, a resident of Yadav Basti, believed her home, given as dowry to her three daughters, would be destroyed due to nearby demolition drives. Fearing her daughters would be left homeless, she hanged herself. HYDRA chairman AV Ranganath denied involvement, stating Buchamma’s house was not marked for demolition. While authorities had surveyed the area, no official notice was issued. The Kukatpally police are investigating the incident, looking into all possible angles, including the role of fear from demolition activity.
