A man nearly missed out on a whopping £680,000 lottery win as his wife presumed it was a hoax.

The winner, from Darwin, Australia, very nearly didn’t collect the money as he was left in total disbelief after his lottery app showed he had won.

The man, who wished to remain anonymous, said he usually received an email straight after the draw, which told him how close he was to winning division one.

“But this time, I didn’t,” he told Daily Mail Australia.

“So when I woke up on Sunday morning, I logged into The Lott app and I saw I had all six numbers.

“I thought ‘well, that’s strange’ and then I saw the prize amount, and I thought it must be some kind of hoax.”

The man was one of five winning entries in this particular TattsLotto draw.

Each winner took home £680,000, or $1,304,946.92 AUD.

The man said it took some time for him to believe that he had scooped the massive prize.

“I was holding my breath the whole time!” he said.

“I had to remember to breathe!”

He said his wife was also in disbelief upon hearing the news.

“She just kept saying, ‘no, it can’t be! It’s got to be a hoax’,” he said.

The huge prize would go towards paying off his mortgage, he said, as well as setting up a retirement fund.

Earlier this year a young couple claimed they missed out on a £182m EuroMillions jackpot when their numbers were drawn but their ticket payment didn’t go through.

Rachel Kennedy, 19, and Liam McCrohan, 21, have been left “absolutely heartbroken” when they realised their usual numbers of 6, 12, 22, 29, 33, 6 and 11 had come up.

They had played the same numbers for five weeks in a row, before all seven digits appeared in Friday night’s draw.

Rachel explained how she had set up her account to automatically buy a EuroMillions ticket for each draw – but when payment for Friday’s ticket was attempted, the lottery account did not have enough funds.

Checking her account after Friday’s draw, she was greeted with a message saying her numbers were a “winning match” – however her heart sank when she realised the glitch.

Rachel said they were “absolutely heartbroken”. She now thinks of her usual weekly numbers as “unlucky” and has since changed them.
