Dogs Trust dogs pick out Christmas presents

Rescue dogs at a shelter have left people in tears after staff shared a video capturing their excitable reactions to a room full of new toys for Christmas.

Dogs Trust Ireland put on the festive activity for the dogs in their care at the rehoming centre in Dublin.

Staff gathered new toys donated by supporters and laid them out on the floor of the training barn at the centre.

They then let the dogs in one by one to sniff out a favourite toy to keep and bring back to their kennel.

Because the dogs might sometimes get nervous around potential new owners, Dogs Trust staff hope to show the true playful personalities of the pups through the heart-warming video.

Each dog approached the task differently, with some giving every toy a thorough sniff while others dived straight in for their favourite.

In the cute clip, one dog called Flounder couldn’t contain their excitement as they whizz around the room, trying to sniff all the toys at once before choosing a knotted ball, and skipping around with it proudly.

Meanwhile, little Gizmo couldn’t seem to choose between a squeaky rubber cow or a chicken, taking turns chewing on each contender.

Some dogs plumped for a more festive choice, with Janice picking up a penguin in a Santa hat, Chase opting for a cuddly elf, and Nico quickly falling in love with a squeaky Christmas pudding.

Staff said a particular highlight was when the pups run to their favourite Canine Carer with their new toy to show off what they have found.

“It’s our favourite day of the year,” says Corina Fitzsimmons, communications manager at Dogs Trust Ireland. “We literally have pains in our faces from smiling at the dogs, and how happy something so simple makes them – dogs really are so pure!”

The adorable video was posted on the Dogs Trust Ireland Facebook page, where the dogs’ wholesome reactions and wagging tails melted viewers’ hearts.

“Makes me cry every year,” one person commented. “So thankful for the wonderful work you do. Hoping forever homes find them all soon.”

Other Facebook users dubbed it “truly heart-warming”, “beautiful” and “fabulous”.
