Healthy public discourse will be ‘lost’ if cancel culture prevails

Healthy public discourse in a liberal society will be lost if cancel culture manages to prevail, according to Centre for Independent Studies Executive Director Tom Switzer.

His comments come amid news a new academic publication is set to come out, titled the ‘Journal of Controversial Ideas’, which will allow researchers and academics to publish articles anonymously in order to protect their careers.

According to Sky News host Chris Kenny, this publication is trying to “get around cancel culture”.

Mr Switzer said cancel culture attempts to “deny platforms to those who don’t conform to the smelly orthodoxies of a militant and loud leftist orthodoxy”.

“But they also seek to banish them from the public consciousness,” he said.

“We’re very close to losing healthy discourse in a liberal society if the cancellers prevail.”
