Health and housing will be top of the agenda when National Cabinet meets today, in the final leadership get-together before the federal budget next month.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will lay out plans to strengthen Medicare and the health care system, after state and territory leaders called for help to ease pressure on their strained hospitals.

It’s understood the federal government’s blueprint will include a new funding program to encourage GP clinics to open after-hours.

It’s expected pharmacies will also soon have further leeway, including the ability to give more vaccinations.

Housing and infrastructure will also be discussed.

The federal government this week unveiled plans to overhaul Australia’s migration system to get more permanent skilled migrants into Australia.

This is set to increase pressure on already-limited housing supply, along with prices.

Leaders are set to discuss the issue today.

It’ll also be a slightly new look around the table with new New South Wales Premier Chris Minns taking his seat for the first time.

It means the only representative of the Coalition in National Cabinet will be Liberal Premier of Tasmania Jeremy Rockliff.
