HC on Marriage: Muslim Man Can Register More Than One Marriage, Says Bombay High Court After Thane Municipal Corporation Rejects Man’s Application As He Marries for Third Time

In a recent ruling, the Bombay High Court said that a Muslim man can register more than one marriage under the Maharashtra Regulation of Marriage Bureaus and Registration of Marriages Act, 1998. The high court bench of Justice BP Colabawalla and Justice Somasekhar Sundareshan further said that the Act does not bar Muslim men from registering more than one marriage since the same is permitted under Muslim personal law. The court observed while hearing a case involving an Indian man and his Algerian wife (petitioners) who sought to register their marriage after their application was rejected by the Thane Municipal Corporation. It was also learned that this was the man’s third marriage. In its defence, the civic authorities claimed that the couple failed to provide the necessary documentation and argued that the law permits only registration of a single marriage for Muslim men. However, the high court firmly rejected the notion that only one marriage could be registered. HC on Stalking: Grooving Head to Music Not Stalking or Attempt To Interact With Woman, Says Bombay High Court; Exonerates Navi Mumbai Man of Stalking Charges.
