Grieving mum’s horror as hospital wraps son’s body with packing tape ‘like a mummy’ – World News

A man who died after being injured in a road accident was taped up “like a mummy” after his death, his heartbroken family has claimed.

Merwin Fabregas was taken into hospital in Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines after being seriously injured in a road accident.

But his distraught mum claims that instead of being treated for his wounds, he was admitted as a Covid-19 patient and taken to the respiratory viral disease ward instead.

“I just kept crying. It’s not what I wanted to happen,” the victim’s mother Mitchilou Fabregas Sapipi said in an interview with the news program 24 Oras.

“They didn’t care about him. They should have taken care of my son but that’s what they did,” the grieving mother said, according to Asia’s alternative news outlet Coconuts.

Hospital director Dr Napoleon Obaña said life support was only switched off once the patient was declared dead, “so we didn’t kill him”.

Responding to questions about why he was treated as a Covid -19 patient, he said: “There is an upsurge of [COVID] cases in Quirino.

“So we want to safeguard those who live in Vizcaya.

“We have to treat it as a suspected COVID case because he might have infected other people. He might spread the infection,” Obaña said.

The Philippines is currently battling one of the worst Covid waves in Asia as the death toll stands at 18,260, with 1.11 million infections.

The number of daily Covid infections has fallen from a peak of 15,310 on April 2, but has stayed above the daily average of roughly 1,700 cases for 2020.

A travel ban for those coming in from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bangladesh is currently in place as the country seeks to protect itself from other potentially deadly variants.
