GOODWOOD, England — The station wagon version of the Genesis G70 will outsell the sedan in Europe, Genesis Europe boss Dominique Boesch said.
The G70 Shooting Brake has been designed for Europe only by the Hyundai-owned brand. It made its public debut at the UK’s Goodwood Festival of Speed on Thursday.
“The body shape is the perfect demonstration of how committed we are to Europe,” Boesch told Automotive News Europe at the event.
He predicted the wagon would outsell the G70 sedan, while the GV70 SUV will be the top-seller overall when the three models arrive later this year.
“It will reflect the structure of the market in Europe,” Boesch said.
The G70 range will join the G80 large sedan and GV80 large SUV that have already gone on sale in Genesis’s three European launch markets: the UK, Germany and Switzerland.
The G70 will be pitched against the BMW 3 Series, Audi A4 and Mercedes-Benz C-Class in the highly competitive premium midsize segment. Prices will be “competitive,” Boesch said without giving details.
The car will be sold with a 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine and a 2.2-liter diesel. A 3.3-liter turbocharged engine offered in the sedan in the U.S. is “under discussion” for Europe, Boesch said. No hybrid or plug-in hybrid version will be offered, restricting the car’s appeal especially in markets where low-CO2 versions attract tax benefits.
No technical details about the cars have been revealed.
The G70 was first shown as a sedan in 2017 in Korea and refreshed in 2020 with the current design language, which repeats a parallel line motif in design details such as the headlights.
Genesis will shift straight to electric power, bypassing plug-in hybrids, Boesch said. The brand’s first full-electric car in Europe will be a battery-powered G80 arriving early next year.
The brand will launch two further electric cars before July next year, one of which will be based on Hyundai’s E-GMP electric platform that underpins the Ioniq 5 electric crossover.
Genesis has not yet said which body styles the two new EVs will have.
