New Delhi, September 23: General Motors (GM), the US-based automobile company, reportedly announced a second round of layoffs to streamline operations. The job cuts are expected to impact around 1,695 employees at its Fairfax Assembly Plant in Kansas. These GM layoffs follow an earlier round of job cuts to adapt to market conditions and improve efficiency. A few days ago, General Motors reportedly announced that it would be laying off hundreds of workers from its Fairfax Assembly plant in Kansas City, Kansas. It is said to be the result of a decision to end production of the Chevrolet Malibu.
As per a report of Business Insider, General Motors announced another round of layoffs, which might affect 1,695 employees at the Fairfax Assembly plant. The General Motors layoffs will likely be implemented in two phases. The first phase might begin on November 18, impacting 936 employees. Among these, 686 full-time employees might face temporary layoffs, while 250 temporary workers will likely have their contracts terminated. GM has not yet provided specific details about this phase. However, the second phase of GM layoffs is rumoured to start on January 12, 2025, which may affect 759 full-time employees. These job cuts are said to be directly associated with GM’s earlier decision made in May to cease production of the Cadillac XT4 model after January 2025 at the Fairfax plant. The production halt is expected to last until late 2025, when both the Cadillac XT4 and Bolt EV are anticipated to resume production on the same assembly line. According to multiple reports, the GM layoffs might not be limited to the Kansas plant.
