PATNA: Father of a Galwan Valley martyr was thrashed, arrested and sent to jail on charges of “encroaching upon village road” by building a memorial to his son on a plot of government land at his village Chakfatah in Vaishali district of Bihar.
Apolice team from Jandaha reached Chakfatah on February 25 night and picked up martyr Jai Kishore Singh’s father Raj Kapoor Singh, thrashed him and took him to the police station on charges of encroaching on the village road. Raj Kapoor was sent tojail the next day.
Police said Raj Kapoor had been arrested under various sections of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities)Act on the complaints of covillager Harinath Ram, who alleged that the martyr’s father had encroached upon certain portion of his private land as well as the village road. When Jai Kishore’s father was building the memorial, some villagers had protested and asked him to build the structure either on his own land or the government land in front of his own. But he built it on the government plot in front of Harinath’s land, a police officer told TOIon Tuesday.
The matter took an ugly turn on January 23 when Harinath submitted a written complaint against Raj Kapoor. After investigation Mahua SDPO Poonam Keshri asked Kapoor to relocate the memorial. When he refused, he was arrested.
The SDPO said, “Repeated requests were made to the martyr’s father to relocate the memorial. He has a huge land parcel near the memorial, but he preferred to build the structure in front of his opponent’s land.”
Opposition BJP on Tuesday took exception to the arrest of a martyr’s father. State BJP spokesperson Nikhil Anand alleged that the incident smacked of the government’s “disrespect” towards the armed forces.
