A commanding performance from France sees them through to the quarterfinals of the FIFA World Cup in style. Kylian Mbappe finds the net twice with superb finishes, while Olivier Giroud breaks Thierry Henry’s French goalscoring record with his 52nd strike for the country. Lewandowski scores a consolation goal for Poland with the last kick of the game.

Mbappe with his second goal of the match and that certainly seals it for France. Another top finish from Mbappe and this time, Szczesny manages to get a glove-tip on it but fails regardless. FRA 3-0 POL, 90+1′  

France are in cruise control at the moment and Poland’s attacking moves look increasingly toothless.

Incredible when you think that this French team is without its entire midfield played in the FIFA World Cup final last year, as well as the striker who won this year’s Ballon d’Or winner, and still look one of the strongest teams in this competition!

France look to be cruising into the quarterfinals of the FIFA World Cup 2022, and if they do, they will lock horns with one of England and Senegal who meet for the second game of the Round of 16 later tonight!

Kylian Mbappe finds the net! And that should be it! A superb finish from the French superstar as he finds the top-left corner; this is his 8th World Cup goal for France – the second-highest from the country!

Just like the first half, France have made an attacking start to the second. Ousmane Dembele flounders an opportunity with a pretty heavy touch that goes straight towards Szczesny, while Mbappe races past Glik for a thundering cross that required a timely interception from the Polish centre-back.

The match resumes in second half with Poland aiming to clear the one-goal deficit, while France eyeing a place in the quarters. 

Olivier Giroud scores at the brink of half-time to give France the lead in the tie. Upamecano passes to Mbappe who threads it down to Giroud. All he needed was to chip the ball past Szczesny into the corner for his 52nd goal for France.

A bit harsh for Poland if one looks at the overall half as the Polish team created number of big chances over the closing minutes of the first half.

For the first 15-20 minutes, it looked like France have this one in their bag. But Poland have since opened this game with multiple close chances. Terrific recovery. FRA 0-0 POL, 42′

Best chance of the game and Poland almost had the lead here. They had three chances within six seconds! A cutback from left deflected towards Zielinski who smashes straight at Lloris from 10 yards. Arguably the best player for Poland in this World Cup so far, Szczesny saves it again for Poland. Mbappe with a close range and the Polish goalkeeper has it covered as he extends his right arm to force a corner. France fail to convert with the corner as well, as the scoreline remains goalless at the 36-minute mark.

Lewandowski hits the wall! Tchouameni was booked for a block tackle on Frankowski. Felt a harsh decision, but the stage was set for the Polish no.9 to add to his World Cup tally, but he hits the wall from 25 yards. FRA 0-0 POL, 32′

It was raised off-side but that was some attack from France. A delicious cross from Ousmane Dembele from right and Olivier Giroud misses an open goal. Not that it would’ve mattered if even he found the net, as the linesman raised the flag for off-side. FRA 0-0 POL, 30′

Mbappe bursts into an almighty sprint again, beating his defender before he gets a touch too heavy. The French star complains to the referee as he feels he was pulled by the defender, but the latter waves it away. FRA 0-0 POL, 27′

A couple of decent attacks from Poland but French defence have their areas covered. Poland, however, having a fair share of possession since the counter-attack in the 20th minute of the game. FRA 0-0 POL, 25′

Lewandowski has his first shot on target! France commits seven players on the attack and lose possession, allowing Poland to penetrate quickly. Lewandowski, however, takes a shot from distance and hits wide off the left post. FRA 0-0 POL, 20′

They might have not broken the deadlock but France have come close to scoring on multiple occasions so far. Szczesny has been kept fairly busy, so are the other Polish defenders in the opening 15 minutes of the tie. FRA 0-0 POL, 16′

France enjoy a terrific record against Poland, with their last defeat against ‘the eagles’ coming in 1982! In their last 7 meetings, France won three and drew four against Poland, with the former keeping a clean sheet in the last three games.

This will be Poland’s first appearance in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 stage in 36 years. The last time they reached the stage was in the 1986 edition in Mexico, where the side had faced a 0-4 loss to Brazil. 

Poland began their campaign with a hard-fought draw against Mexico before Lewandowski found the net in a 2-0 win over Saudi Arabia. The side, however, faced a 0-2 defeat to Argentina in its final group stage game.

Poland’s goal difference, however, remained better than Mexico at the end of all games in the group as they qualified for the knock-outs.

France have reached this stage five times in their World Cup history, and progressed on each occasion. In fact, this is the side’s third successive round-of-16 appearance.

In the 2018 World Cup, France registered a famous 4-3 win over Lionel Messi’s Argentina, as Kylian Mbappe score a brace in a fine performance.

Wahbi Khazri scored the only goal for Tunisia in their memorable victory against France, with Antoine Griezmann’s injury-time equalizer being ruled out.
