Flood-hit New South Wales communities have begun damage assessments as they begin what will be a huge clean-up operation.

The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast widespread intense rain to ease from today, with sunny warm weather for many parts.

But more rain is forecast across parts of the Murray River Basin throughout the week, which the bureau warns could lead to more flooding and river level rises.

The State Emergency Service is urging people not to be complacent.

They should remain vigilant because there could still be water in low lying areas, and local roads could still have water over them.

“Despite the severe weather easing over the next couple of days, the flood threat remains in many areas across the state as major flood peaks moving downstream and road closures continue,” SES Deputy Commissioner Austin said.

“Storms are still possible and can cause flash flooding, so we ask drivers to take care as any amount of rainfall can create a dangerous situation with saturated catchments.”
