Two unidentified people allegedly attacked and tried to rob the family of a ‘gau rakshak’ at Pune’s Warje Malwadi on the night of March 24, the police said.
Anurag Hiwale, 26, lodged the first information report (FIR) in the case at the Warje Malwadi police station on March 25. In the FIR, Hiwale sought a probe pointing out that his brother-in-law Shivshankar Swamy was an honorary animal welfare officer and a well-known ‘gau rakshak’ who has faced attacks in the past.
As per the FIR, around 11.15 pm on March 24, Hiwale, his wife (Swamy’s sister) and their four-year-old son were going home on a motorcycle when two people on a scooter allegedly intercepted them near Amrapali Hotel in Warje Malwadi. The duo allegedly threatened the couple with a sharp weapon and demanded money.
The duo allegedly snatched Hiwale’s wallet. As there was no cash in it, they got angry and allegedly attacked the motorcycle twice with the weapon, damaging the vehicle. The assailants then allegedly threatened Hiwale that they were leaving him because his son was with him and left the place, the FIR said.
Hiwale then approached the police and filed a complaint. The police have booked the accused under sections 392, 341, 504, 427 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code under various charges, including robbery, and sections of the Indian Arms Act.
Police security has been provided to Swamy since 2015, citing attacks on him and inputs about threats to his life.
