Ex-CM Naveen Patnaik to be leader of opposition in Odisha state assembly | India News

NEW DELHI: Former chief minister of Odisha Naveen Patnaik announced on Wednesday that he would assume the role of the leader of the opposition in the state assembly.
This decision was reached during a meeting of the Biju Janata Dal‘s (BJD) legislature party, as Patnaik informed reporters. “We just had a meeting of the BJD MLAs who have been elected to the recent elections.I congratulated and thanked them. They have elected me as the LoP and the leader of the Biju Legislative Party,” he said.
In the meeting, Prasanna Acharya, a senior MLA, was appointed as the deputy leader of the opposition.
Pramila Mallik, who previously served as the speaker, was chosen to be the chief whip of the opposition in the assembly. Additionally, Pratap Keshari Deb was selected by Patnaik to serve as the deputy chief whip of the opposition.
The BJD, which had governed Odisha for the past 24 years, was defeated by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the recent assembly elections. Mohan Charan Majhi assumed the role of CM on June 12 after elections results were announced on June 4.
