Ex-Bangladesh Captain Tamim Iqbal Announces Retirement From International Cricket Ahead Of Champions Trophy

Former Bangladesh cricket captain Tamim Iqbal has announced his retirement from international cricket, marking the end of an illustrious career.

In a heartfelt message posted on Facebook on Friday, Tamim stated, “I end my chapter in international cricket. I have been away from international cricket for a long time. That distance will never punch again.”

This is the second time Tamim has announced his retirement. Earlier in 2023, he had made a similar decision but it was reversed by the intervention of Bangladesh’s then Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, after an emotional press conference. However, this time, his decision appears final.

Tamim explained that he has been contemplating this move for a while and does not want to disrupt the team’s focus ahead of important tournaments, such as the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy.

He also revealed that he had voluntarily stepped back from the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) central contract long ago to avoid unnecessary speculation.

“The decision to retire or continue playing is the right of a cricketer or any professional athlete,” Tamim wrote. “I gave myself time. Now I feel like the time has come.”

Despite efforts by Bangladesh captain Nazmul Hossain Shanto and the selection committee to bring him back into the team, Tamim chose to listen to his inner voice. He also reflected on the disappointment of being omitted from the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup squad, which had deeply affected him.

”Captain Nazmul Hossain Shanto sincerely asked me to return. Discussion with the election committee also. Gratitude to them for still making me feel worthy. But I heard my mind.”

Tamim’s decision also carries a personal angle. He shared that his young son often wondered why he was no longer playing in the Bangladesh jersey. Addressing his son, Tamim said, “The day you grow up, you will understand your father.”

Tamim Iqbal’s career spanned 70 Tests, 243 ODIs, and 78 T20Is, making him one of the greatest cricketers in Bangladesh’s history. He remains the highest run-scorer for Bangladesh in ODIs, amassing 8357 runs.

Here are some highlights of his career:

A memorable debut Test innings of 84 against New Zealand in Dunedin. His maiden Test century in 2009, a match-winning 128 against West Indies in St Vincent.

A record-breaking unbeaten 154 in a high-pressure chase against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo. A stunning century (103) at Lord’s in May 2010 during a Test series against England.

Tamim’s consistency at the top of the order and his ability to deliver under pressure have left a lasting legacy in Bangladesh cricket. His retirement marks the conclusion of an era for one of the country’s most celebrated cricketers.
