Etah: Police Book 10-Year-Old Boy For Rioting, Attempt to Murder After Dispute Over Installation of Water Tap in UP

Etah, September 22: In Etah district, Uttar Pradesh, police have come under criticism for registering charges of rioting and attempted murder against a 10-year-old boy following a dispute over the installation of a water tap. The boy, a Class 6 student, was named alongside seven other family members, including four women, in an FIR under several provisions of the recently-enacted Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Navbharat Times reported that the incident occurred on September 17 in Jaithara town when a fight broke out between two groups over the water tap. Both sides filed written complaints with the police, requesting FIRs. However, the boy’s family claims the police only acted on one complaint, naming the child, his father, and others without any preliminary investigation. Ambur Shocker: Engineer Strangles Worker’s 2 Sons to Death Over Loan Dispute in Tamil Nadu, Arrested.

The family approached the Etah superintendent of police (SP), alleging that the FIR was registered unfairly and their complaint was ignored. They argue that the inclusion of the 10-year-old in such serious charges, including attempt to murder, is unjust and unlawful. Ghaziabad Shocker: 2 Injured As Clash Erupts Among Blinkit Delivery Workers in Uttar Pradesh, Disturbing Video Surfaces.

Additional superintendent of police (ASP) Rajkumar Singh explained that the child was included in the FIR because his age was not specified in the original complaint. He assured that the boy’s name would be removed after further investigation and directed the police station to correct the mistake.

Legal experts have criticised the police for not conducting a primary probe before filing the FIR, as required by the BNS for non-heinous crimes.
