Ensure smooth, hassle-free voter experience: Poll body chief to CEOs ahead of assembly polls | India News

NEW DELHI: Ahead of publication of revised electoral rolls with January 1, 2022 as the reference date, chief election commissioner Sushil Chandra on Monday asked the chief electoral officers of all states and Union territories to ensure the expeditious redressal of all pending applications with regard to voter registration. Also, with EC preparing for conduct of assembly polls in five states early next year, Chandra reiterated the need for the CEOs to ensure a smooth and hassle-free voter experience inside the polling stations.
At a meeting with state chief electoral officers organised by the EC on Monday, Chandra said the new initiatives and best practices adopted by different CEOs for poll-related activities should be regularly disseminated via the media, for enhanced outreach. He asked the CEOs to make sure that the electoral roll was error-free and the polling stations easily accessible to persons with disabilities, besides instructing them to interact regularly with the political parties to redress their grievances.
Election commissioner Rajiv Kumar reminded the CEOs that the legal and regulatory framework of elections was quite robust, and emphasised that the implementation of EC’s instructions at the field was very critical. He said the CEOs needed to be innovative, more active and learn from each other’s best practices and challenges.
Election commissioner Anup Chandra Pandey stressed upon training & capacity building of booth level officers (BLOs) and called for the involvement of different stakeholders and officials in the field for outreach & SVEEP activities the year, including the non-election period.
EC secretary general Umesh Sinha in his address stated that Monday’s conference with CEOs was being organized to understand their field level functioning, coordination with different stakeholders and implementation of the commission’s instructions.
EC on Monday released ‘Compendium of Cases on Election Law’ and ‘Information Booklet For Voters’. The second booklet contains end-to-end information covering voter registration, postal ballot, casting of vote through EVM-VVPAT & various other facilities.
The conference was attended by, besides the CEOs, senior DECs, DECs, DG and other senior officers from the Commission. A separate one-day review meeting with all the poll-going states is also scheduled at ECI on Tuesday.
