Education Minister issues universities ultimatum on adoption of free speech code

Education Minister Alan Tudge has called on eight remaining Australian universities to begin implementing and enacting a French model code to enshrine protections to free speech in its charter, or the government will enforce it through legislation.

“All universities have agreed to it and I simply want it enacted and I’ve said to them today … if they don’t enact it … then we will legislate later this year in order to do so,” he said.

“It’s the key principle which underpins what our universities are about.

“Frankly, I’ve lost patience because it’s just taken too long.”
