Australian Financial Review Political Editor Phil Coorey says the nation’s economic recovery has helped the Coalition government recover from its slump in popularity.
Latest data from Newspoll shows the Morrison government has recovered ground and drawn level with Labor on a two-party preferred basis despite Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s approval rating falling by two points.
“When the Coalition fell behind Labor a couple of months ago, that was largely, if not completely, self-inflicted,” he said.
“It was around the Brittany Higgins time and the Christian Porter stuff so it was nothing Labor did to get ahead, it was the government falling behind.
“So it sort of makes sense that as that sort of stuff receded a bit in the memory, we’re back onto the budget and the economy and stuff that have come back.”
