‘Devara Part 1’ Ending Explained: Major Twists, Unanswered Questions, and What To Expect in Sequel of Jr NTR, Saif Ali Khan and Janhvi Kapoor’s Movie (SPOILER ALERT)

Devara Part 1 opened to a strong audience reception and mixed reviews. The film marks Jr NTR’s return to the big screen after his memorable role as Komaram Bheem in SS Rajamouli’s Oscar-winning RRR. This time, Jr NTR also serves as the producer. Written and directed by Koratala Siva, Devara Part 1 features Saif Ali Khan and Janhvi Kapoor in their Telugu debuts, with Anirudh Ravichander composing the music. As the title suggests, Devara is a two-part film, with the sequel yet to be shot. However, the first movie leaves several unanswered questions that we hope will be addressed in the sequel whenever it is released. ‘Devara Part 1’ Movie Review: Jr NTR Is Terrific, Saif Ali Khan Is Decent and Janhvi Kapoor Is Gratuitous in Koratala Siva’s Overstretched Actioner.

Here’s a quick rundown of the plot (Major SPOILERS ahead): Devara is the head of a group of four isolated coastal villages. His forefathers fought the British and looted them, but Devara and his men are now involved in smuggling goods from cargo ships, avoiding customs. When his men become violent, Devara puts an end to the smuggling and forbids anyone in his tribe from engaging in it. Frustrated, Bhaira persuades some tribesmen to kill Devara while he’s drunk on the beach, but Devara manages to kill nearly all of them. Guilt-ridden by the bloodshed, Devara realises his men will only fear him if he becomes invisible, so he disappears from the village, never to be seen again. He continues to protect the seas, attacking wannabe smugglers from his village while remaining unseen.

Twelve years later, Devara’s son Vara has grown up, but he resents his father for abandoning his family. Meanwhile, Bhaira has trained a group of young men in warfare and weaponry, planning to use them for smuggling, though the threat of the elusive Devara still lingers.

So, what happens in the climax? Will Vara embrace his father’s legacy? Will the two reunite? And what’s next in Part 2?

The Double Twist Ending of ‘Devara Part 1’

The climax of Devara Part 1 delivers a bloody mid-ocean ambush and two major twists—one fairly predictable and one more puzzling. It turns out Devara is dead, and Vara has been carrying out his father’s deeds in Devara’s name while pretending to be cowardly to deceive others. Vara reveals his true self to the audience (but not to the villains) when he ambushes Bhaira’s men as Devara, attacking them as they return with smuggled goods, while also pretending to be one of their gang. In the film’s most outlandish moment, Vara even rides a shark!

A Still From Devara Part 1

After killing Bhaira’s men and carrying their corpses back to the beach, Vara is welcomed by Singappa and a few elders who know about his double identity (they reveal this secret to Vara’s mother). While they’re pleased that ‘Devara’ lives on through Vara, Singappa is shocked by Vara’s request—to stab him to death. Vara wants to show that his father is like Senapathi—uncompromising, even with his own son if he indulges in smuggling. He also fears that sparing himself would raise suspicion. When Singappa refuses, Vara impales himself on a knife he places in the boat, seemingly dying in Singappa’s arms. But his assumed death leaves many questions unanswered.

Why Did Vara Kill Devara?

Or did he really stab his father? After it’s revealed that Vara has been carrying out Devara’s work, and that he wrote Devara’s warning in blood on the rock for Bhaira and the others, we also learn that Vara was present when Devara was stabbed. Did he stab his father, or was he trying to remove the dagger from him?

There’s no clear reason why Vara would kill Devara, at least none given to the audience, leading to the assumption that someone else was responsible. But who? It seems unlikely that Bhaira or his gang were involved, as they show no signs of having injured him. And if Vara has been carrying out his father’s attacks since childhood, when did he learn such guerrilla warfare, and where did he dispose of Devara’s body? ‘Devara – Part 1’: Did You Know Jr NTR and Janhvi Kapoor’s Film Features 3000 CG Shots and 30 Minutes of Underwater Action?

Whose Skeletons Are Beneath the Sea?

Devara and Vara’s story is recounted when a visiting cop (played by Ajay) dives into the sea to retrieve his ring and instead discovers skeletons underwater.

While Singappa narrates a lengthy story filled with killings, he never explains how the bodies ended up there. If both Devara and Vara are dead, who killed these unfortunate souls?

Who is Yethi?

The police arrive at Devara’s village in search of Yethi, a mysterious, unseen smuggler, but we never get any further information about this figure. Perhaps we would have learned more if the cops hadn’t been sidetracked by Devara’s tale.

Will Yethi be revealed in the sequel? Rumours suggest that Bobby Deol has been cast in the sequel, so if that’s true, there could be a possibility that he may play this role.

Who Attacked DSP Thulasi and Killed Murugan?

When the police approach DSP Thulasi for information about Murugan, who is linked to Yethi, they learn Murugan is dead. By the end of the film, however, we don’t see Vara killing Murugan. So, who did? And who gave Thulasi the facial scar?

What’s Bhaira’s Game Plan?

In the first act, Bhaira tells the cops that he’s stopped all smuggling activities at sea. Did the events of the climax prompt this decision, or did Murugan’s death force him to lay low?

Also, why didn’t Vara kill Bhaira when he had ample opportunity? His death could have instilled enough fear to deter future smugglers.

Is Vara Really Dead?

The most obvious question… for what we know, he could just be grievously injured… and Singappa is keeping him alive somewhere…

At the time of writing, Devara Part 2 is still in pre-production, and there’s no official word on when shooting will begin. Stay tuned for updates on this eagerly awaited sequel.
