NEW DELHI: The sixth anniversary of demonetisation should be observed as the тАЬsixth death anniversaryтАЭ of Indian economy, Congress said on Tuesday, adding that Prime Minister Narendra ModiтАЩs тАЬcruel jokeтАЭ on the Indian people served as the тАЬbiggest destroyer of livelihoods and small businessesтАЭ, a body blow from which the economy has not recovered.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said demonetisation marked six years of ModiтАЩs тАЬorganised loot and legalised plunderтАЭ, plunged IndiaтАЩs growth and тАЬkilled (peopleтАЩs) aspirationsтАЭ.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also attacked PM Modi over demonetisation. тАЬDemonetisation was a deliberate move by тАШPayPMтАЩ to ensure 2-3 of his billionaire friends monopolise India’s economy by finishing small & medium businesses,тАЭ Gandhi tweeted.
Kharge, on the other hand, said demonetisation resulted in IndiaтАЩs growth plunging, crores of jobs being lost, small businesses getting destroyed, savings getting extinguished, and the poor suffering the most.
тАЬPM wanted 50 days… Nation has given him six years. But none of the DeMo claims has been realised. Instead, people are still suffering!тАЭ Kharge said.
Congress also tore into the Modi government and said that far from cleaning up black money, demonetisation had led to 99.3% of demonetised currency returning into the system.
тАЬBlack money thrives under PM Modi! Then, Modi government claimed that DEMONetisation shall eradicate fake currency in the system. Reality: Even last year, there was an overall increase of 10.7% in fake currency!тАЭ Kharge said.
Demanding a white paper on demonetisation, Congress spokesperson Gaurav Vallabh also said that the PM must acknowledge that demonetisation was an тАЬepic failureтАЭ and his government must share what plans it has for the unorganised sector and MSMEs who had suffered the most in this exercise.
