Daria Berenato Looks Back On Becoming First First Openly Gay Female Wrestler In WWE History

Daria Berenato is remembering what it was like to make history as WWEтАЩs first openly gay female wrestler.

тАЬI really just want to be a voice for the community in sports тАФ specifically, in the WWE,тАЭ said the 27-year-old in a new interview with Variety.

Bernato, whoтАЩs real name is Sonya Deville, came out on national TV while starring in тАЬTough EnoughтАЭ, ┬аwhich awards the winner with a WWE contract.

Although her family knew that she was gay, the sports star had not yet came out publicly.

тАЬI honestly thought that was going to hurt my chances of get┬нting hired. ThatтАЩs just how naive I was,тАЭ she remembered. тАЬI didnтАЩt accept myself, so I didnтАЩt think anyone else was going to accept me.тАЭ

Bernato continued, тАЬI want to let people know that their sexuality doesnтАЩt define them and how they identify doesnтАЩt define them. And IтАЩm a perfect example of it.тАЭ

On her connection with the LGBTQ+ commu┬нnity now, Berenato added, тАЬI would say that about 70% of my fan base is part of the commu┬нnity somehow, some way.тАЭ
