Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on January 2, 2023, condemned an incident in which a 20-year-old woman was killed after her two-wheeler was hit by a car and her body dragged for 4Km from Sultanpuri to Kanjhawala.
Taking to Twitter, Mr. Kejriwal said the incident was “shameful” and the culprits should be “punished severely”. “What happened to our sister in Kanjhawala is very shameful. I hope that the culprits will be punished severely,” the national convenor of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) said in a tweet in Hindi.
“Five men have been arrested in connection with the woman’s death. The victim’s two-wheeler was hit by a car in which the accused were travelling on January 1,” police said.
A video purportedly showing the woman’s body without clothes and broken legs has surfaced on social media. PTI could not independently check the veracity of the video. The footage also led to claims that the victim was raped and killed, but police said it was an accident.
The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) has issued a notice to the city police in connection with the incident.
Police said the victim’s body was sent to the Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital at Mangolpuri for post-mortem. They said the victim’s leg got entangled in one of the wheels of the car and she was dragged for around four kilometres.
AAP to gherao LG’s residence to protest against ‘weak’ law-and-order situation
The AAP will be laying a siege around Delhi Lieutenant Governor V. K. Saxena’s residence on January 2 to protest against the “weak” law-and-order situation in the national capital.
AAP MLA Durgesh Pathak said women are not safe in the city. “The national capital is becoming a crime city. Our sisters and daughters are not safe in Delhi. And the LG has left the responsibility of law and order to do politics. At 2 p.m. on Monday, we will gherao the LG’s residence in protest over the weak law-and-order situation,” Mr. Pathak said in a tweet in Hindi.
DCW chief poses series of questions to Delhi Police
Delhi Commission for Women chief Swati Maliwal asked police to clarify if the woman, whose body was dragged for 4KM by a car that had hit her scooter, was sexually harassed and if the accused had a criminal history.
In a series of questions she posed to the Delhi Police in connection with the incident at Kanjhawla, Ms. Maliwal said, “I have some questions for Delhi Police — Was the woman sexually harassed by the accused? Was she killed like this after she protested over the harassment? For how many kilometres was she dragged by the car? Was there no checkpost or OCR van deployed on the stretch that she (was) dragged on?” Ms. Maliwal asked.
“Did the accused men have previous criminal cases against them? We have issued summons to Delhi Police and want them to answer these questions. Till when will our girls be killed like this? This is a case that shames our humanity. This is a very scary incident that happened in the national capital,” she said.
She also questioned police over the immediate action taken after the incident was reported to the control room and the special security arrangements that were in place in the national capital for New Year.
