A NEW coronavirus case has been detected in Lara, with Barwon Health urging the public to keep an eye out for potential exposure sites.

Barwon South West public health unit director Eugene Athan confirmed there was a new positive case in Lara who is isolating with their family.

“Information on any local exposure sites will be made available as soon as possible once investigations are complete,” Prof Athan said.

Greater Geelong had just a single active Covid case listed on Monday, as Victoria announced 71 new locally acquired cases.

Forty-nine of those were linked to known outbreaks but 22 were still under investigation.

Of the new cases, just 16 were in isolation during their infectious period, with Premier Daniel Andrews saying the figure was “a significant concern”.

Mr Andrews urged Victorians to take advantage of vaccine appoint availability, and said there were thousands of bookings that could be made for the vaccination hub in Norlane over the next week.

Prof Athan said he was pleased with how our community has responded to the vaccination rollout so far.

“We have now delivered more than 184,000 doses across the Barwon South West,” he said.

“Local GPs have also played a vital role providing AstraZeneca and Pfizer doses through their

general practices.”

“Our Community Vaccination Hub has seen strong demand from people aged 18-39 over the past week, and as we continue to add more appointments to the booking system, we hope this demand continues as more vaccination doses are added each week.”

Prof Athan said the number of people seeking COVID-19 testing has increased and there was an ability to expand testing capacity and opening times if required.

“Our team are also providing support to Shepparton with 15 staff from across the BSW region assisting Goulburn Valley Health with their COVID-19 testing response,” Prof Athan said.

Prof Athan said the unit’s contact tracing team was supporting exposure site management in Melbourne.

“We would like to remind the Geelong community to remain vigilant and get tested at the first sign of COVID-19 symptoms, however mild,” he said.

“We also ask everyone to regularly check the Department of Health website to keep updated on exposure sites and follow the health guidelines.”
