OECD Secretary-General Mathias Cormann told Sky News the most important measure to optimise economic recovery during this time is an effective, timely and comprehensive global vaccine rollout.
The former Australian finance minister is currently settling into his five-year term as head of the OECD.
“I do think that the most important measure to optimise the economic recovery at this point in time is to have an effective and timely globally comprehensive rollout of the vaccine everywhere,” he told Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell.
“There is a race between in the end getting a sufficient proportion of the global population vaccinated and the risks of further variants emerging that might ultimately be immune to the vaccine.”
Mr Cormann also praised Australia’s ‘”rapid” catch up on vaccination levels in response to criticisms about the pace of the nation’s rollout.
“From what I am seeing and from what I’m reading there is a rapid catch-up in terms of the level of vaccinations In Australia and that’s a good thing,” he said.
