Comics mark 50 millionth Toyota Corolla

Toyota Motor Co. celebrated its 50 millionth Corolla sale in a uniquely Japanese fashion: with a series of manga comics about the 55-year-old sedan.

The automaker created illustrations about the world’s top-selling car over the decades. Each was inspired by a photo submitted by a Corolla owner, according to the website Japanese Nostalgic Car.

For the 1960s, when the Corolla was introduced, a man brings a new E10 home to his wife, who worries they can’t afford it. But after they take their kids for a drive, the family enjoys the car so much that the wife forgets about her concerns. The 1970s depiction involves a father taking his teenage son for a drive in an E20, and the son later reminiscing about the time they spent together in the car once he has to do the driving.
