The cold snap gripping Australia’s south-east has continued with residents across multiple states shivering through a frosty morning.
The mercury dipped to a low of -1C in Canberra leading to morning frost, while residents in Melbourne, Hobart and Adelaide copped a low of 8C. Sydney recorded a low of 9C.
The chilly temperatures will continue into the weekend.
The Bureau of Meteorology’s (BoM) five-day forecast shows Canberra will cop a low of 1C on Friday, and 2C on Saturday and Sunday.
In Hobart tomorrow it will dip to 7C. Saturday and Sunday will be even colder, with a low 5C is forecast.
Melbourne will also reach lows of 5C and 6C on Saturday and Sunday.
The wintery-chill is due to a cold front that swept up from Tasmania and over the Great Australian Bight to the mainland, where it delivered heavy snow falls to alpine regions.
“The series of cold fronts crossing Tasmania have briefly surged far enough north to deliver a surprisingly heavy snowfall to mainland alpine regions,” Weatherzone explained.
“Meanwhile in Tasmania, locals say the snow depth is now around 20 cm at the tiny volunteer-run skifield of Mt Mawson.”
On the mainland, Perisher Valley Ski Resort in NSW’s Kosciuszko National Park saw about 11 cm of snow fall.
Flurries also dusted Falls Creek in Victoria.
It’s the second time snow has fallen on the alps in May.

After a cold morning, Sydney’s temperatures will climb to 19C. It will be a mostly sunny day.
After a frosty low of -1C the mercury will climb to 15C in the nation’s capital.
It will be partly cloudy in Melbourne. A maximum of 15C is forecast.
Similar cloudy conditions will be felt in Adelaide. A low of 8C and a maximum of 18C is forecast.
A possible shower could fall on Hobart, which will experience a top temperature of 14C.
It will be sunny in Darwin. The mercury will reach a maximum of 34C.
A “shower or two” will soak Perth, with the BoM forecasting between 1 – 2 mm of rain. A low of 13C will be experienced before temperatures climb to 22C.
