China: Queues outside Covid testing centres in Xi’an

A city has started widespread disinfection measures since to counter a jump in Covid infections that forced the lockdown of 13 million residents.

Authorities in Xi’an, China, are spraying the entire city and have asked people to close their windows and avoid touching architectural surfaces.

They have also been asked not to touch vegetation on the streets.

Restrictions by the republic mean private cars have also been banned from the roads according to The Penisula.

The action was taken as daily infections rose to around 150 on Sunday and Monday as health authorities tried to find more cases and introduced a fourth round of mass testing.

The 2022 Winter Olympics are expected to begin in Beijing on February 4.

On Monday China is said to have reported total of 162 domestic Covid infections.

Of those, 150 were discovered in the western city of Xi’an, which was highest daily caseload since January 22.

Such a surge is rarely seen in China, which which has been trying to curb the virus using closed borders and stringent domestic curbs under what’s called a Zero Covid strategy.

The outbreak, which has recorded 600 cases in less than three weeks, is being blamed on the Delta variant.

Bloomberg said the difficulty China faces is reducing domestic infections to zero as the virus mutates and escapes measures to contain it.

A “handful of omicron infections” have been found among visitors from other countries but, Bloomberg reports the nation has not found more infectious and immunity-evading variant in the community.

Authorities locked down Xi’an after concerns the virus had been spreading under the radar with many of the transmission routes unknown.

Local media quoted Zhang Boli, a senior medical adviser to the Chinese government on Covid, as saying it is still possible to get the outbreak under control by the end of January before the Olympics.
