Chennai Shocker: Youth Takes Weight Loss Pills Without Prescription, Dies

Chennai, January 5: In a tragic incident, a 21-year-old man died on Wednesday after allegedly taking weight reduction pills at Tambaram. The deceased, Surya of Somangalam near Sriperumbudur, was working at a private milk shop. Police said his friends used to mock him for being obese, due to which he decided to lose weight by taking pills.

Police have called the private company officials to appear for an inquiry regarding the dosage and ingredients in drugs, a senior police officer said to TOI.

Police said that Surya had been consulting doctors and local practitioners for weight loss and after taking suggestions from his friend and browsing online, he started taking weight reduction pills from December 22. Surya fell seriously ill n New Year’s day and was admitted to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in a critical condition. He was kept in ICU while under treatment. Based on the complaint from Surya’s father, Palayam, the Somangalam police registered a case and launched a probe. Police said the exact reason for the death would be known only after the post-mortem examination.
