Spanish police pepper-sprayed jubilant England fans celebrating the team’s win during a show of force on Magaluf’s Punta Ballena strip last night.

Armed officers with truncheons at the ready were filmed marching down the strip and ordering tourists celebrating the nation’s semi-final victory over Denmark off the road and onto the pavement.

An officer used his pepper spray on a bare-chested Brit who was pushed to the kerb as his colleagues walked past others singing “Football’s coming home”.

Several partygoers could be seen pulling up their T-shirts to cover their mouths and rubbing their eyes in discomfort as they left the area moments later.

Earlier in the evening, another England fan risked a fine by walking behind a police patrol car advancing slowly up the strip with a can of his drink in his hand.

He appeared to lap up the attention he was getting from other revellers as he held his arms high in the air and sang “Football’s coming home” with other shirtless friends by his side.

The appearance of the Civil Guard was met with boos from England fans who were dancing in the street and throwing drinks over each other as the final whistle blew on another great performance from Gareth Southgate’s boys.

One Brit could be overheard shouting “I’ve just been hit by a baton” as the patrol officers cleared the street.

Local town hall-employed police also joined them in trying to maintain order.

There were no immediate reports of any injuries or arrests.

The show of strength by the police followed a regional government decision to extend special restrictions in place in German-popular party resorts in Majorca to Magaluf following the UK’s decision to put the Balearic Islands on its green travel list.

The new rules, which have also begun to apply to San Antonio in Ibiza, mean pubs and restaurants in these areas must shut at 2am unless the local council brings forward closing times.

They also restrict the number of people who can sit together at tables.

During the day the Balearic Islands government and the British Consulate had announced they were continuing to join forces to combat so-called “trash tourism”.

British Consul General Lloyd Milen said: “We want people to have a holiday to remember, not one to forget”.

He also promoted an update of the Foreign Office’s 2019 “Stick With Your Mates” campaign to help British tourists stay safe on nights out.

Regional governors and local authority officials whose remit includes Magaluf have been urging UK holidaymakers to behave responsibility since the Balearic Islands went on the green list last week.

Police are expected to be mobilised in even greater numbers at the weekend for the Euro 2020 final between England and Italy.
