Cat ‘Kidnapping’ Case: Karnataka High Court Stays Criminal Proceedings Against Man Accused of Taking Neighbour’s Cat Hostage, Tells Cops To Focus on ‘More Serious Crime’

Bengaluru, July 24: In a legal development, the Karnataka High Court has stayed the criminal proceedings against Taha Husain, a man accused of unlawfully keeping a cat in his possession. The case involves allegations that Husain held the complainant’s cat in his home to cause trouble. Justice M Nagaprasanna of the single-judge bench granted interim relief on July 22, continuing further action.

The court ruled, “There shall be an interim order of stay of the further proceedings in C.C.No.13477/2022 till the disposal of the petition.” The ruling comes from a case in which a woman, Nikita Anjana Iyer, filed a complaint claiming that CCTV footage showed Husain holding her cat in his home, and Husain has allegedly kept it there. ‘Consensual Sex Not Rape If Relationship Ends’: Karnataka High Court Quashes Rape Case Against Man Accused of Raping Woman on Pretext of Marriage.

ETV Bharat reported that on the grounds of the CCTV footage, Iyer had registered a case against Hussain under FIR under Sections 504, 506, and 509 of the Indian Penal Code-1860 for threatening life, breach of peace, and endangering the dignity of the complainant woman. Husain’s lawyer argued that cats naturally come and go through windows and that pursuing this case is trivial. They claimed that continuing with such minor charges would misuse the legal system, so they asked the court to suspend further proceedings. HC on Visiting Child Porn Website: Karnataka High Court Recalls Order Stating Only Viewing Child Pornography Is Not Offence.

Further, the court questioned why police investigated such a minor issue instead of focusing on more serious crimes. As a result, the court has suspended further legal action in the case and issued a notice to the government. The 4th Additional Civil and JMFC Court had started the case in September 2022, but Husain challenged this decision in the High Court.
